Death Certificates

The Register of Deeds office is responsible for maintaining the death records of anyone who passes away in Scotland County. There are a variety of ways for you to get a copy or certified copy of a death record including coming to the office, placing a request online or making a request by mail. Please note that certified copies can only be issued to a limited set of relatives (e.g., spouse, parents, siblings, children, grandparents, grandchildren) or legal representatives.

If the person for whom you are requesting a death certificate passed away in another county in North Carolina, please visit that Register’s office or website for more information on obtaining your death record. We are in the process of adding the ability to produce other North Carolina death certificates in the office.

The State of North Carolina requires that anyone wishing to obtain a certified copy of a death certificate must be at least 18 years of age and provide a valid ID to identify themselves and pay a fee.

In Person Requests

You may visit the Register of Deeds office in person to obtain a copy during regular business hours.  For faster service at the office, you may complete the request form in advance to bring with you.

Online Requests

We have partnered with Get Certificates Now to fulfill requests for death certificates online.  As part of your online request, you will need to upload a copy of any of the accepted valid ID’s or fax a copy of one of the above accepted valid ID’s to 910-277-3133.  Generally we try to process the request within 2 working days from receipt and then use first class mail to deliver the certificate.   In addition to the normal fees, there is a convenience fee added to your cost from Get Certificates Now.

Mail Requests

To obtain a certified copy of a vital record by mail, please send the signed application along with a certified check or money order for payment of the fees, a self-addressed stamped envelope, and a copy of any accepted valid ID's.  Should you need expedited mailing, please let us know in in advance so we can let you know the added cost.
