Retirement Benefits 

Scotland County is committed to helping you prepare for a secure financial future. Whether you're just starting your career or planning to retire soon, our retirement benefits offer flexibility, support, and long-term value.

N.C. Local Governmental Employees’ Retirement System (LGERS)

Employees working at least 1,000 hours annually are automatically enrolled in the North Carolina LGERS defined benefit pension plan. Employees contribute 6% of gross wages (pre-tax). 

After 5 years of creditable service, you are vested and eligible for lifetime monthly payments based on your salary and service at retirement.

NC 401(k) & 457(b) Supplemental Retirement Plans

Scotland County offers two powerful ways to save more for retirement: the NC 401(k) and NC 457(b) Plans. These are optional, tax-advantaged savings plans administered by Empower Retirement.

Both plans accept pre-tax and Roth (after-tax) contributions and offer a wide range of investment options. Plans are fully portable upon separation.

County Matching Contributions:
  • 2% employee contribution = 2.5% County match
  • 3% or more = 3% County match
  • Law Enforcement Officers: 5% County match
