Family and Leave Benefits
Paid Holidays
Scotland County provides paid time off for designated holidays each year, as approved by the Board of Commissioners. This includes major national holidays and additional days that may be set annually. Employees are notified in advance of the approved holiday calendar.
Holiday ScheduleAnnual Leave
Employees accrue annual leave each month based on years of service. Leave can be used for rest, personal travel, or time away from work. Accruals increase with service length and may be carried over, subject to limits. Employees may be eligible for a payout upon separation.
Sick Leave
Sick leave is accrued monthly and may be used for personal illness, medical or dental appointments, and illness of immediate family members. Proper use and documentation may be required. Unused sick leave may contribute to retirement service credit.
Family and Medical Leave (FMLA)
Eligible employees can take up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act for the birth or adoption of a child, a serious health condition, or to care for an immediate family member. Health benefits remain active during this leave.
Bereavement Leave
Employees may be granted time off to mourn and attend services following the death of an immediate family member. The number of days granted depends on the employee’s relationship to the deceased.
Voluntary Shared Leave
Allows employees to donate a portion of their accrued leave to a fellow employee facing a serious medical hardship. This benefit helps ensure income continuation when an employee has exhausted all available leave.
Military Leave
Employees called to active duty, training, or reserve service are granted military leave in accordance with federal and state law. Leave is job-protected and may be paid or unpaid based on the type of service.
Educational Leave
Educational leave may be granted for approved academic or training programs that enhance an employee's ability to perform their job. Leave may be paid or unpaid and requires approval by management.
Civil Leave
Civil leave provides paid time off for employees serving jury duty or subpoenaed as witnesses in court. Verification of court service is required for approval and compensation.
Administrative Leave
Administrative leave may be authorized for special circumstances, such as emergencies, adverse weather, investigations, or other operational needs as determined by the County Manager or HR Director.
Leave Without Pay
This leave may be granted when no other leave options are available. Employees must receive prior approval and understand that benefits and pay are impacted during the unpaid period.
Petty Leave
Petty leave covers short-term absences for personal matters, typically lasting less than a full workday. Approval from a supervisor is required and documentation may be necessary depending on the request.
